概要

Distillations of Architecture

建築と結びつけると、「Distillation(蒸留)」とは無駄を排除し建築のアイデアとプロセスを洗練するための大切な作業を意味するでしょう。今回のフォーラムでは、建築の蒸留をテーマに、現在様々な観点から、興味深い手法と技術を用いて研究を行っている建築デザイナーおよび素材作家を招待しました。ここには家具という概念を再考し、住空間もまた建築の蒸留の結果として精製される可能性があります。

Furniture(家具)の語源を辿ると、フランス語の Fourniture、ラテン語の Mobiles まで遡ることができます。それは移動性と適応性に基づき一定の耐久性を兼ね備えた生活機能を満たすオブジェや装置を指すようです。一方、日本語の家(house)具(means)を組み合わせた言葉は、かつての床を中心とした生活空間を反映しており、椅子やテーブルなどが存在しなかった時代から受け継がれています。

現在一般的な家具が消費品として量産されその概念が家から切り離されてゆく中、日本には、その現状にあたかも疑問を投げかけるかのように、建築の要素を家具に融合させるかのような作風を持った建築家や、素材や伝統技術の応用を試みる研究者がいます。彼らは可動性や連鎖性、コンパクトさを追求し、法的・経済的な課題に巧みに対応しながら、環境を重視しつつ興味深い住空間を生み出しています。多くのプロジェクトは都市から個々の人体までスケールを移行し、建築のアイデアを蒸留し、手段の経済性を体現しているかのようです。

今回のフォーラムに続き今年11月には、ロンドンのAAスクールで同タイトルの展覧会 Distillation of Architecture – House / Means を開催予定です。4人の建築家デザイナーと4人の素材制作研究者がペアを組み、現代都市における家具の意味を探求するプロトタイプオブジェを共同で制作する挑戦に臨みます。

This forum invites architectural designers and material artists whose unique research perspectives resonate with the theme of architectural distillation. Here, rethinking furniture questions the concept of living spaces: Architectural Distillation. The origin of the word “Furniture” can be traced back to the French word “furniture” and the Latin word “mobiles.” It refers to objects and devices that fulfil the functions of life based on mobility and adaptability and with a certain degree of durability. On the other hand, the Japanese words that stand for furniture consist of “house” and “means”, reflect a living space centred on the floor and date back to an era when chairs and tables did not exist. Currently, ordinary furniture is mass-produced as a consumer item, and the concept of furniture is being separated from the framework of the house, but in Japan, as if to question the current situation, there is a design tendency that fuses architectural elements into furniture. There are architects with unique styles and researchers who try to adapt new materials with traditional techniques. They strive for mobility, connectivity and compactness, deftly responding to legal and economic challenges and reinventing living spaces with an emphasis on the environment. Many projects shift the scale from the city to the individual human body, distilling architectural ideas and seeming to embody an economy of means. Following this forum, an exhibition with the same title, “Distillation of Architecture—House / Means,” is scheduled to be held at the AA School in London in November of this year. Four architect designers and four materials production researchers will be paired together to collaboratively create prototype objects that explore the meaning of furniture in the modern city.

これまで32年にわたるロンドンAAスクールと前田建設による学術研究活動は1992年の日本の若手建築家5人展の AAでの開催に始まり、イギリスおよび日本国内での一連のワークショップを経て、同学の江頭慎氏が提唱する「Social Sustainability」をテーマに持続性を社会環境内に探求するプロジェクトをグローバルかつローカルに取り組んでいます。

Academic research activities between the London AA School and Maeda Construction have spanned over 32 years, starting with the AA’s holding of an exhibition of five young Japanese architects in 1992. After a series of workshops in the UK and Japan, under the theme of “Social Sustainability”, we are working on projects that explore sustainability within the social environment both globally and locally.
